As neither script has been deciphered, our knowledge of Minoan civilization is scanty and imprecise; most of it is derived from the material remains uncovered by archaeologists. The Spartans while civilised and philosophical were less interested in fancy buildings, or large monuments, than some of their Greek counterparts. Athens was also motivated to encourage trade to obtain revenue from taxes. It took time for the Ottomans to officially recognize Greece’s freedom, but eventually King Otto of Bavaria became ruler of the new Greek state.

C, they became masters of an empire that stretched from Sicily and southern Italy in the west to Asia Minor and the Levant coast in the east.
