Because we need to escape a current hell? Because we want vengeance against someone else? There are several different types, each of which offers its own set of pleasures and satisfactions. We were almost too enchanted to put it on this list. My favorite story hands down is �The Pool of Tears�, a story told entirely through letters and emails between a man and his estranged daughter. Filled with stars that have broken out or are about to, Skins was a step on the road of the careers of some of today’s most exciting actors, including Nicholas Hoult, Dev Patel, Kaya Scodelario, Jack O’Connell, and Game of Thrones’ Hannah Murray and Joe Dempsie.

Two years before Zombieland hit theaters, Living with the Dead milked the undead apocalypse for laughs with the comedic adventures of “two boys, a girl and seven billion living dead.” There may not have been any zombie kills of the week, but writer Mike Richardson (best known as the founder of Dark Horse Comics) and illustrator Ben Stenbeck’s three-issue mini-series featured plenty of thrills along with the comedy.

I’ve seen this happen in previous years; we’ll be back in business in a month or two. Those stories were then illustrated and collected into this volume. We were shooting in the middle of nowhere with a very small crew, no backup equipment, shooting incredibly tight days using a 1976 Ford truck that had to be in working condition the entire time and, by some miracle, it all worked out. I think Peter Straub’s “Blue Rose” is a major work of the era.
